Ushering in the Reiwa Era

Exhibition Overview

The year 2023 marks the 5th year of His Majesty the Emperor’s reign and the 30th wedding anniversary of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress. This autumn, for its reopening event following renovations, the Museum of the Imperial Collections is pleased to host this exhibition that introduces aspects of Their Majesties’ lives and showcases milestones from their 30-year journey together.

Highlights include formal attire worn during the wedding ceremony, such as Her Majesty Empress Masako’s wedding gown, as well as articles of clothing made to commemorate key moments in the childhood of Her Imperial Highness Princess Aiko. The historic vestments and furnishings used in the accession ceremonies, congratulatory gifts from diverse well-wishers, as well as images of Their Majesties carrying on the cherished traditions of the Imperial Household are also on display. Visitors will discover the many duties Their Majesties have undertaken thus far while also gaining a richer understanding of how these objects and events are woven into the fabric of Japan's cultural heritage.
